U.S. Women Fear Food, Self-Image; Study: 'Disordered Eating' Rife

Byline: Jennifer Harper, THE WASHINGTON TIMES

It's not just the epic struggle with calories and the waistline.

Anxious, angry and melancholy, 75 percent of American women admit to "disordered eating" owing to a fear of fatness, distorted self-image and unrealistic expectations about dieting, according to research released yesterday by the University of North Carolina's School of Medicine.

Food has become a complicated issue for women. What they eat - or don't eat - is often equated with happiness. Some diet even though they are at a healthy weight. Skipping meals, smoking to stay slim and extreme attention to calorie counting is common.

That little holiday weight gain? More than a quarter of women would be "extremely upset" if they put on just five pounds.

"These behaviors cut across racial and ethnic lines and are not limited to any one group," said Cynthia R. Bulik, a nutrition professor at the campus, who led the research.

"Women who identified their ethnic backgrounds as Hispanic or Latina, white, black or African American and Asian were all represented among the women who reported unhealthy eating behaviors," she said.

The research was based on a survey of more than 4,000 women who revealed intimate eating habits, from the amount of time they spent dieting to how often they thought about food.

Two-thirds of them were actually on a diet while more than half dieted even though they were of a normal weight. Some said they lied about their dieting - not to mention their weight. Others admitted their weight and body image was "the most important aspect" of their self-identity.

Dieting extremes were not uncommon.

"What we found most surprising was the unexpectedly high number of women who engage in unhealthy purging activities. …

Food Drive's Founder Is Leaving a Really Good Scout Gets Food to Needy

Victor Volland Of the Post-Dispatch, St Louis Post-Dispatch (MO)

In a sense, the Scouting for Food drive that begins Saturday will be the last hurrah for St. Louis Boy Scout Executive Bob Meinholtz. This will be the last time Meinholtz heads the program, which he initiated nearly a decade ago.

But Meinholtz, who is retiring in May, isn't stopping to reminisce about the program, now a national model. The continued rise in hunger here and around the nation, coupled with new cutbacks in federal food commodities, promises to make this year's Scouting for Food effort the most important ever.

The drive hit its peak two years ago, when the Scouts collected 1.75 million pounds of food, said Meinholtz.

"And last year, even with all the collecting we were doing during the flood, we managed to take in 1.5 million pounds. But we need to top the 1992 record this time," he stressed.

More than 300,000 people seek help at area food pantries each month, an increase of about 10 percent in the past year, said Glenn Koenen. He is a board member of the Metropolitan St. Louis Food Pantry Association. Most of the growth in the past year has been among the working poor in St. Louis County and St. Charles County, he said.

At the same time, government surplus foodstuffs distributed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are being cut by about two-thirds in the budget year that began Oct. 1.

Frank Finnegan, executive director of the nonprofit St. Louis Area Food Bank, said butter was the only government commodity now on hand. In the past, cheese, cornmeal, flour and honey were available.

Only about 1 million pounds of surplus food is expected to be available to the Food Bank and its 325 member pantries in the coming year. That's less than what will be produced by the one-shot Scouting for Food, the Food Bank's greatest source of high-protein, high-nutrition foods - such as canned meats, stews, chili and beans - Finnegan said.

The collection, the largest single-day food drive in the country, will adequately stock the shelves of the Food Bank and its pantries through the difficult first months of next year, he said.

The 10th annual Scouting for Food kicks off Saturday when some 30,000 area Cub and Boy Scouts drop off plastic collection bags at thousands of homes in eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois. They will return the following Saturday, Nov. 12, to collect filled bags.

"We effectively shut down the Scout Council for two weeks, close all our camps and focus solely on the food drive," said Meinholtz, who has headed the nation's sixth-largest council since 1980. …

Moderate Weight Gain over Time May Be Healthy

Donna Kato, Los Angeles Times, THE JOURNAL RECORD

It all translates to the same thing: As you grow older, your girth expands.

If you catch yourself yearning for the day you can get back into your bridal gown or military uniform, consider medical evidence that implies it is healthier to gain a few pounds as you age than stay at the same fighting weight of your teens or 20s.

In this weight-conscious era of less-is-better, there are some physicians who stand by the premise that a little weight gain over the years actually may help you live longer, provided you are healthy and carrying a bit of extra weight is not a medical risk.

These conclusions were reached by the Gerontology Research Center (GRC) of the National Institute on Aging.

``Research accumulated over the past 10 to 15 years shows evidence that gradual, modest weight gain seems to go along with a lower mortality rate,'' said Dr. Herman Frankel, the medical director of the Portland (Ore.) Health Institute and chairman of the board of the Obesity Foundation, an affiliate of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians.

``If you gain too much weight or gain it too fast, it puts you at risk to die sooner. And if you aren't gaining weight, it seems to be an indication of something possibly being wrong,'' he said.

His assertions are based on research conducted at the Baltimore-based National Institute on Aging and supported by other independent studies such as Boston University Medical School's Framingham Heart Study.

According to the gerontology center data, healthy individuals who steadily gained six to 10 pounds per decade had lower mortality rates than people who gained no weight or those who gained a large amount.

The findings first were published five years ago in the Annals of Internal Medicine and will be updated in the new edition of the ``Principles of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology,'' currently being prepared for publication.

Dr. Reubin Andres, director of the center and a principal player in the study, challenged the long-held standards of what is considered normal weight - the Metropolitian Life Insurance chart, which bases ideal weight ranges on gender and height for everyone between the ages of 25 and 59.

The GRC chart, developed by Andres and his colleagues, makes age the primary consideration and separates the weight range for each decade between 25 and 65 years old. (There was not enough data on individuals over the age of 70 to include in the study.)

``The Metropolitan Life table is about right for someone in his or her 40s,'' Andres said. ``It's too liberal for the 20s and not liberal enough for the decades after the 40s.''

Among his other reasons for questioning the validity of the Metropolitan chart is the fact that data was haphazardly collected by insurance actuaries from subjects insured by the company in the 1950s.

These people tended to be white and middle class, and provided their weight and measurements instead of being actually measured. In addition, the chart only considered height and weight measurements - poor indications of the body's true fat composition and distribution.

Study: Fast-Food Limits Didn't Cut Obesity Rate in South L.A

Chang, Alicia, The Charleston Gazette (Charleston, WV)

LOS ANGELES - A much-hailed law that restricted the opening of new stand-alone fast-food restaurants in one of the poorest sections of Los Angeles did not curb obesity or improve diets, a new study found. City lawmakers passed the zoning ordinance in 2008 that limited the opening or expansion of fast-food outlets in a 32- square-mile area south of Interstate 10 that struggles with high obesity rates and other health problems.

The law, believed to be the first effort of its kind by a major city to improve public health, did not ban new eateries in strip malls.

The research by the Rand Corp. think tank found that obesity rates in South Los Angeles continued to rise after passage of the law.

"It had no meaningful effect, Rand senior economist Roland Sturm said. "There's no evidence that diets have improved more in South LA. Obesity and overweight rates have not fallen.

Health experts said a single intervention would not reverse the obesity problem. People also have to exercise and make lifestyle changes, they said.

"It's not just about limiting unhealthy food, but increasing access to healthy food, said Alex Ortega, a professor of public health at the University of California, Los Angeles, who had no role in the study.

Rand researchers reviewed permits issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, which inspects food outlets. There were no licenses for stand-alone fast-food restaurants, but chains opened 17 new outlets in strip shopping centers and food courts in South Los Angeles from 2008 to 2012.

Almost half of the new food permits were for convenience stores that sell soda and junk food, the study found.

Researchers also compared obesity rates in South Los Angeles and other parts of the county using surveys that asked residents to report their weight and eating habits. …

Relieve Pinched Nerves In Your Lumbar Area And Get Rid Of The Pain!

If there is pressure on the root of the lumbar nerve, it can cause pain in some parts of the sciatic nerve. Spinal stenosis, a spondylolésistance, degenerative disc disease, disc herniation or other abnormalities of the vertebrae may put pressure on the nerve.

Sciatica is characterized by tingling, numbness, weakness or pain in the legs.
Unfortunately, the pain can be intense and continuous, which contributes to the difficulty of movement. It can worsen at night, stress, sneezing, coughing, and after hours of rest and sitting.

Conventional sciatica treatment includes specific analgesics prescribed by a physician. But if you try to perform simple muscle stretching exercises, as well as the standard treatment, the terrible sciatic pain will disappear in some time.
We will present simple stretches that are very beneficial and can reduce inflammation and relieve pain. You may have problems at first, but as you practice daily and increase stretching, it will become easy and routine.

At first, lie on the floor and bend the painful leg. Pull it lightly toward your shoulder and when you feel the stretch, you should remain in this position for thirty seconds. Then stretch your legs and take a rest. Repeat the exercise 2 times.
